A lot of conversations can qualify as crucial conversations. You may have had a crucial conversation already today and not even realized you were having one.听
鈥淲e鈥檙e all in conversations every day about a multitude of things,鈥 Hauser said. 鈥淣ow we know better than ever that they can be remote. They can be written. 鈥 What we鈥檝e learned over the years is not all conversations have the same impact. What we think of as crucial conversations are those conversations that matter.鈥
Hauser added that crucial conversations make a difference in the outcomes of things we care about or affect relationships.听
鈥淲hen the stakes are high, 鈥淗auser said, 鈥渢he conversations are pretty crucial.鈥
Hauser said we don鈥檛 see the opportunity to have certain crucial conversations because 鈥渨e鈥檙e numb to them. Often we鈥檝e just learned to cope with the situation and don鈥檛 think it can get any better.鈥澛
鈥淚t might come up three times in one sitting with my mother-in-law,鈥 she added with a laugh.听
Some common topics for crucial conversations that we really didn鈥檛 see a decade or two ago are:聽
鈥淚t runs the gamut,鈥 Hauser said. 鈥淚t includes just about everything that impacts our productivity.鈥
Hauser emphasizes the importance of awareness of others and what鈥檚 important to them. Avoiding conversations on a tough subject can often lead to bigger issues.
She encourages three steps when approaching crucial conversations: share, tell, ask.听
